In addition, in October several OHS freshman sent in taped auditions for the John Philip Sousa Honor Band, which are two bands comprised of students grades 6-9 from across the state. These students will perform at the Lied Center in Lawrence in January:

SENIOR PICTURES
In order to be pictured in the yearbook, 2010 senior portraits are due on Dec. 11, 2009 in Room 309.
WE NEED TWO VERTICAL PICTURES OF YOU FOR THE 2010 YEARBOOK!
**One will be used for the yearbook—the other will be passed on to Mr. Mobley to give to the Ottawa Herald.
**Please be sure to select photos that are school-appropriate and follow the OHS student dress code. They should be as close up as possible. The backgrounds of “scenic” photos can be distracting, especially when placed next to 150 other distracting backgrounds!
**Please note: We will post a list of all the seniors who HAVE NOT turned in portraits after winter break. This list will be posted throughout the school. Seniors are responsible for checking that list to make sure portraits havebeen delivered and received by the yearbook staff.
**If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the yearbook adviser, Michelle Wilmes, at 229.8020

Ottawa High Renaissance Program
Receives Grant
Mrs. Hofmeier & Mrs. Jenkins are proud to announce tha
t the Ottawa High School Renaissance Program has been
selected as a recipient of a $9,000 grant from the American
Eagle Outfitters Foundation.
The two sponsors submitted a grant application last summer, requesting funds to create a scholarship program for current
OHS Students. As outlined, the scholarship program would
provide students a stipend covering tuition fees so that they may
take dual credit classes through Neosho County Community
College. The program is geared towards assisting students
whose families show economic need.
With the notification that the program will receive funding via
the grant, the American Eagle Outfitters Foundation Scholarship Program will be made available to Ottawa High students for the
2010-2011 school year. Additional information on the program
and application process will be made available to students during
pre-enrollment, spring 2010.

CP ENGLISH 11 (Ms. Ecroyd):
Using questioning
techniques and looking for personal relevance in
learning are two reading and critical thinking skills students used to study non-fiction essays in Ms. Ecroyd’s CP
English 11 in October. After reading essays, each student worked in a group of 3 or 4 to teach the class the important concepts covered in one of the essays. The pictures shown
are 7th Block students using kinetic learning to illustrate
one of the points about teens working in the fast food industry (they are teaching an excerpt from the book
Fast Food Nation).
In November, as part of our Native American Literature
unit, students studied a traditional Native American poem, determining theme and identifying the four traits of oral literature. They then presented the poem to their class through a poster, a presentation of the ideas found in their poem, and a choral reading. Two of these posters are
pictured. |
