WHAT WE DO:
The Record, Ottawa High School's yearbook, is a student-run publication. Students are responsible for designing pages, writing stories, and taking photos. Producing the yearbook is a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun. While the yearbook staff captures the memories of each year, they also learn valuable skills that will help them long after they leave the journalism classroom.
Students learn to communicate professionally with their peers, teachers, school administration and local businesses through interviewing and advertising. Writing skills are also developed with a focus on writing for a specific audience, using evidence to support claims, and editing. In addition, students learn to create appealing visual products using digital media. The yearbook staff also offers leadership opportunities through business management and editor positions.
Many changes are happening with the 2014 book. Students will receive the book in the spring before graduation, with an insertable supplement containing spring sports, prom, and graduation delivered at enrollment. The book will also be printed in all color for the first time.
Students should enroll in 21st Century Journalism (first semester) and Graphic Design Fundamentals (second semester) as introductory courses. In these classes, students will learn the skills they need to produce a great yearbook. After completion of these courses, students can apply to be part of the yearbook staff.
COMPETITIONS & AWARDS
Staff members have an opportunity each spring to compete in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional competition. If they place in the top three in their division, they move on to the state competition in May.
Each fall, the yearbook is submitted for evaluation from both the Kansas and National Scholastic Press Associations. The Record has received All-Kansas recognition, naming it one of the top yearbooks in the state, from 2008-2012. The 2012 book also received a First Class rating from NSPA with a mark of distinction in coverage.
