If you have been following recent Kansas legislative action, you may already be aware of the new restrictions regarding personal electronic devices in schools. As a result, Ottawa High School will be implementing the district's updated cell phone policy this year. This policy is designed to support a safe and productive learning environment for all students. In accordance with Kansas House Bill 2299, all personal electronic devices not provided by USD 290 (included but not limited to cell phones, smartwatches, speakers, earbuds, etc.) are not permitted to be accessible in the building. Students are encouraged to leave devices at home. If brought to school, devices should be powered off and securely stored in a locked vehicle or assigned locker beginning no later than 7:45 am until 3:00 pm. This includes passing periods and Cyclone Hour.
As you and your student discuss what this will look like for your family, please be prepared to indicate during online enrollment whether your student will need a locker assigned for electronic device storage. You will: Click yes, my student will need a locker, or no, my student will leave their devices at home or in a locked vehicle when completing your online enrollment for the 26-27 school year.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. We have also included a graphic outlining the new expectations. This information can also be found on page 27 of the Ottawa High School Student Handbook, which is available on the OHS website under the Student tab.
Thank you for your support and patience as we navigate the expectations of Kansas House Bill 2299.
Sincerely,
OHS Admin
